Kumbh Mela is made up of two-words Kumbh and Mela. The name Kumbh is derived from the immortal pot of nectar which the Devatas and the demons fought over (Samudra Manthan) as described in ancient Vedic scriptures. Mela, as we all are familiar, is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘gathering’ or ‘to meet’. It is believed that, a few drops from the Kumbh fell at four places – Allahabad, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik.

Kumbh Mela Meaning And Mythology
Samudra Mantan (the whipping of the mythological ocean, Kshir Sagar) is mentioned in various ancient Indian scriptures such as Srimad Bhagavat, Vishnu Purana, Mahabharata and Ramayana. These passages tell of how, after the Gods lost their power, they came up with the idea to shake Kshir Sagar in order to get Amrit.
They soon realized that the feat could not be achieved without the help of their opponents, the asuras (demons). A temporary agreement was concluded on the division of Amrit between them.
After completing the assignment, a struggle ensued between the two groups for the possession of a kumbh (jug) containing divine nectar. They fought for twelve days and nights, which equals twelve human years.
While the battle was going on, Lord Vishnu’s carriage, Garuda (heavenly bird), flew away with Kumbha. During this flight, several drops of Amrit spilled over four places on earth, namely Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain and Nashik. To commemorate this celestial and mythical event, the Kumbh Mela is held four times every twelve years in these four locations.
Kumbha is performed in four locations 12 years apart in India. There are 3 types of Kumbha: Purna Kumbha Mela, Ardh Kumbha Mela and Kumbha Mela.
